It’s been a hot minute since I shared any of my WIPs or FOs.

These Falling Snow Stockings represent my very first foray into colorwork, and while they are fairly obviously amateur, I couldn’t be more thrilled with my entry-level results.

They’re big, sturdy, attractive, and — best of all — super-fast. My first one (the red one) took me about a month of on-and-off work, because I was nervous about the new technique. My second one was worked up over the course of my Thanksgiving weekend.

I’m glad to have done this project, not least because they were functional for the holiday season, but also because they gave me a kind of crash course in basic sock construction. This spring, I’m hoping to challenge myself by making the Denature socks for my science-nerd boyfriend. Stay tuned!

Left to Right: Blue sock wool, Purple Handspun, Bamboo Needles, Red Handspun

PORTLAND HAUL
July 25, 2012

This past week I tripped out to Portland and hit up some of the local yarn stores. My long-standing project is The Beekeepers Quilt in which I am only using yarn that reminds of the Pacific Northwest; being in Portland I had to find something for it. Also, living in the midwest, good sock wool is hard to come by - as are good yarn stores. (It is unfortunate that it is so limited here as there isn’t anything else to do but knit and crochet.) So the abundance of wool I found in Oregon was almost overwhelming.

My aunt introduced me to one of her close friends who is an expert in all things yarn and took me out to educate and show me some tips. It was a great time and of course, I spent my entire yarn budget.

The first shop we went to was Yarnia, a DIY yarn shop that almost made me pee my pants from excitement. (Picture, Top Right) The skeins on the right and the left were premade. The first, which I picked because it was a beautiful sea-foam green, is a culmination of Bamboo, Wool, Mohair and Merino and sock/fingering weight. The second is almost 700 yards of a sport weight mixture of Wool, Rayon, Cashmere and Cotton. (This color was picked because of its relation to pine trees.) The third skein is the one I customized myself. It is made of Wool and Cotton, sock weight, and the colors chosen are my favorite and look like the sky. The symbolism of all the colors is the poet in me.

The second picture are my finds at The Knittn’ Kitten, a vintage/resale craft store. (Picture, Top Left) I was pleasantly surprised at the size of their yarn selection and the quality of the wool they sold. The first two are sock wool that is going into my quilt. The second two, purple and red, were both individual skeins of handspun/hand dyed yarn. This is my first purchase of handspun and I really enjoy knitting with it. The purple wool is going into my quilt as well and the red is being knitted into a pair of socks. Another thing I really like about the shop was their quantity of pre-used needles. The set in the picture are seven inch, 6.0mm bamboo needles. I paid a little under four dollars for them.

These places are worth a visit if you are in the Portland area and if not, you can order their products off of their websites. Yarnia will let you customize your own online or order pre-made. I’ll list the addresses of the shops below.
Keep Calm and Carry Yarn xxx

Hello my knitting friends! Here are a few really cute (and free!) birdie knitting patterns for the spring season that I ran into last night.

1. Blue Tit

2. Bluebird

3. Spring Chick

Of course you can make their colors anything you’d like, they don’t have to be blue or tits! :-) I’ll find some crocheted ones to post as well!

I’ve kind of been wanting to make myself a cowl, and even went so far as to start one (hated the yarn I was using). I’m even still ogling pictures of cowls, but for some reason my roving startitis hasn’t settled down enough to focus on starting specific projects. Fortunately, it seems to be translating nicely into working on my existing WIPs, but all the same….I want to start all of the things.

Colchita en crochet de Slip Stitch es una preciosidad

A través de Flickr:
This was a gift for my new-born nephew, Omer.
It was a family project done by almost all the women in my family: my mom, my two aunts, my sister, my two cousins, and of course me.
It took us 2 months, and 27 different colors of green and blue.
